Don’t Call It a Blog!

Timing is everything. Reviewing blog themes, designs, and content was a great idea ten years ago. Executing the great idea ten years late? Well… I may need an intervention.

It turns out that when you wait for a decade, things change. Blogs are still around, thankfully, and themes are still being designed. What’s changed is the terminology. Somewhere around 2012, a large segment of bloggers started transitioning their home page designs from a single column of blog articles to a static, more traditional website feel.

Why Our Blog Theme Is So Minimal

For a blog that likes to taste and sample other blog themes, you’d think we’d put a lot of time and energy into our own design. Those who can’t do, teach, right?

Fair point.

Since blog tasting is the name of this gig, I thought it would be fitting for our theme to avoid being a distraction to the content. So you’ll notice that you hardly notice the design of this theme, because we’ve focused on the content we’re actually writing about.

Take a break from blogging without losing traffic. here’s how

I hate to break it to you, but you look like you need a break. 🙂

If the idea of a break from blogging doesn’t resonate with you at the core of your being, you don’t have a pulse. Especially if you’ve been doing this full-time for more than a couple years.

Feeling a little claustrophobic? Chained to your blog? Believe it or not, you CAN get away. We all need a break from the norm. Even bloggers deserve vacations, sabbaticals, and moments of solitude. But it takes too much extra work to have posts ready to cover a vacation!

So let your readers write for you. Why should you have to work extra hard before your time off just so you can be too tired to enjoy it?

I began my WordPress odyssey one year after Heather and I married on an island beach in the Caribbean. So when I say that I’m leaving WordPress for another CMS, a lot of emotions are involved. It’s an odd predicament, transferring my 11 year-old blog from WordPress to Medium. It feels like quitting a job in which I’ve achieved mastery in order to do something entirely fantastical and, at least in the minds of some, entirely impractical.

I want to take you briefly through the history of this site’s evolution and wrap up with some reasons why this change had potential to work.

Adventures in Babysitting

My mind was somewhere else as I backed up the car until I heard CRRRRUUUUNNNCH!!!

We managed without a nanny for six months. It was a frustrating season for mom and dad. Our pod was completed, but we couldn’t find an opportunity to use it until we hired some help.

Is Your Vision Worth Keeping? Then Don’t Let it Go

I just laid my journal back down on the desk. All it takes is 5-10 minutes to relieve the pressure building up on the inside. Today’s pressure goes back to personal vision. Read more

Why Writing Your Story Is So Important

I’ve already explained my reason for writing, journaling, and blogging my story. But something was missing. I didn’t hit the mark. I talked about some things I hope to accomplish. But I think there is a greater mission. At the core, I think we ALL should write at least part of our stories and pass them down to future generations. Read more

This Website Is For You If

…You are concerned about the direction our culture has taken. You try to avoid current events because the bad news never stops. You focus your thoughts and dreams on what you might do to provide for your own family under many different scenarios.

You don’t want to live in fear. But you don’t want to be a fool either. So you keep on building, working, planning. But you ponder. What if? What would we do? Is there more that we could do now?

Yes. There is. There is more. You can create. And in the process of creation, you can provide. You can supply. You can protect. You can build rather than horde or destroy.

It is time to become a more capable human being. Time to become a person with REAL skills. And to, in turn, pass those skills on to a new generation. A generation who will never know the latchkey tv babysitter world.

The next generation will be competent, capable, and aware. They will be free, independent, and capable of making the decisions that must be made to return our region to the freedom it so ungratefully used to know. But this new generation will not just be free. They will be able. They will be creative. They will be skilled. They will be wise. And we are their fathers. We are their mothers.

And through the process of our actions and our changes in course, we create new neural pathways to a future that was formally impossible, but is now become possible. New neural pathways. New social pathways.

We will, because we must. And we must, before all is stripped away.

Blogging is More Than Formulas

I’ve spent years reading, studying, and writing blogs to fit formulas in search of the golden ticket. And I’ve recently had a cathartic moment of truth when I realized my bloglife had to change.

Money is great. It pays bills. It feeds families. But I can’t blog anylonger with money as my chief goal. The message has to be AUTHENTIC, from the heart, and free of gimmicks. Much love to all the “how to blog” blogs out there, but my #1 goal is to write content worth writing. Read more
